A Small List Of Books

Posted in Culture, art with tags , , , , , , , , , on February 5, 2010 by Castro

Just looking around my room, I can see about half of my books sitting on the floor against the wall, and thought it was time to begin to list them on this blog, so I’ll put ten of my favorites from what I have in front of me. I wrote them in no particular order but actually after writing it, it’s not so far from the truth.

1. Naked Lunch by William Burroughs – I’ve read this book several times over the last 2 decades or so, and every time it grows in scope and proves to be what I always thought it was – a straight up masterpiece!

2. The Crystal World by J.G. Ballard – Just as you open this book, your hit with this, and instantly hooked!

“By day fantastic birds flew through the petrified forest, and jewelled crocodiles glittered like heraldic salamanders on the banks of the crystalline river.

By night the illuminated man raced among the trees, his arms like golden cartwheels, his head like a spectral crown…”

3. I Am That by Nisargadatta Maharaj – the book that changed it all – the Niz is a straight talking fiery sage dishing out the only truth that no one can negate.

4. Open Veins Of Latin America by Eduardo Galeano – a passionate history lesson told, as they should be, with compassion and an absolute dedication to the people.

5. Open Secret by Wei Wu Wei – A real head fuck at first, like ‘I Am That’, but once you see what he is saying, quotes like this, are a simple sweetness that cut sharp through the milieu “The Asker, is the Answer” or “Do you remember? When you look at a reflection of the moon in a puddle you are the moon looking at itself”

6. Legacy Of Ashes by Tim Weiner – A true horror/thriller about a confused and completely lost absurd bunch of people.

7. Beat Writers At Work edited by George Plimpton – A collection of interviews with some of my favorite writers.

8. Manufacturing Consent by Noam Chomsky and Edward S. Herman- Still the best book on understanding how the media frames stories through self indoctrination – this woke me up to a lot of the bullshit.

9. Slapstick or Lonesome No More by Kurt Vonnegut – A little favorite of mine from someone who’s books have colored my teenage years.

10.The Wild Boys by William Burroughs- I still dip in from time to time, the title itself is enough to grab you.

It’s Been A While…

Posted in Culture, Movie Lists, bisexuality with tags , , , , , , , , on February 1, 2010 by Castro

It’s been a while since I’ve written here, for various reasons, but I think I’m back. Sort of – I mean, getting off line has been good.

I’ve moved house during that time and am now living a block away from the beach here in Burleigh Heads. My daily routine has adapted quiet nicely to the new area as well. I’ve been working, then doing some weights, going for a run along the beach, then going for a swim, usually in the afternoon after the small crowds have gone home to there warm and glowing TV’s.

I’ve also been in music production hell, only to have just stepped out of it (I’ll have a new demo to try and sell soon).

I’ve been getting nicely stoned from time to time.

I’ve been reading a bit (currently reading Island by Aldous Huxley)

And I’ve even attempted to write something longer than a blog entry!

————————-

And for the necessary part of this new years entry I’d like to do a cheesy best Movies/TV etc I’ve watched last year – I’ll limit it to my top 4

1.Revolver – Best movie I saw last year, and easily Guy’s best and smartest movie yet. For those that have gone through the process that Jason Statham’s character goes through, this movie is a real treat. The entire movie is about the nature of identity. So for those on the “seeking” path this flick is of particular note. And, if you watched Revolver and were confused well repeat this line  - “the greatest trick he ever pulled was to make you think your him”.

2.District 9 – I’m a sucker for a good sci fi flick, and this was easily the best one I’ve seen in a while.

3.Antichrist – A true horror movie, and not one that you’ll feel like watching very often, if ever again. Ok, so I came away from this movie with confirmed beliefs on the fragile female state. I also walked away from this movie a little confused at the overall message. But, due to the sheer audacity, acting, directing, camera work, editing and the bit where the fox rips out a chunk of it’s own flesh and says “chaos reigns”  etc etc this easily belongs in my list.

4.The Box – A flawed movie that had loads of potential. I dug it though just because of the overflow of ideas. And, again, I’m a sucker for sci fi.

Now, I’m not a fan of TV, but, there have been a few notables that I caught on to last year.

1. Breaking Bad – A must see, and not just because I’d break Jesse Pinkman.

2. Reno 911 – Comedy at breakneck speed – just crazy silly fun

3. Dexter – last season was a blast

4. Robot Chicken – I hated Robot Chicken, but Season 4 was actually really funny.

One thing I haven’t done much of, is get laid. I had a discussion and realization with my straight flat mate the other night. I realized that my problem with Gay men is the same problem all straight men have with women. And that I actually have even more in common with straight men than I ever thought. I’m a guy who’s into men. My flat mate is a guy that’s into women. And he’s problem is that even though he likes the female body, he just isn’t attracted to their gossip filled brain offerings.

All the non hetero men I know of have become effeminate. Even though I’m attracted to the male body, I’m not attracted to the effeminate/camp gay brain. So I find myself in the same predicament that all my straight mates are in.

I once asked another straight relative, how he deals with the female brain, and he’s answer was quick and spot on “just ignore it”.

In other words – just fuck em’ and don’t pay attention to them. Yes honey, your right honey, absolutely honey – then fuck em’. I know, it seems harsh since I know a few women who aren’t typical, so let’s just keep that in mind when talking about the masses. I’m sure there are a few Gays who never went the full clone, but still call themselves Gay – although I’m not quiet sure they even know what that means.

I think I need to adopt that straight mans attitude and apply them toward the Gays.

Of course – we are trained to behave in a certain way. I’d like to think I could change that somehow, someway. But, in the meantime -

I’ll ‘Just have to ignore it’ and adopt the bane of the Straight male.

Stimming and Violeta Parra

One of my favorite tracks of recent times is also from one of my favorite producers pushing out the goods right now. This track is called La Pena and features a vocal sample by the late great Chilean artist Violeta Parra.

Violeta was a vocal opponent of aggressive Capitalist policies in Chile.

Here is the original amazing track from which the sample was taken.

And another nice track by Stimming called ‘Melodica’ that I picked up recently.

38!

Posted in Culture with tags on December 22, 2009 by Castro

38 today!

Just another day you might say… but it’s a chance to appreciate what this bundle of stuff called Marcelo has brought into this fun, scary ride.

Of course  - 38 is just a stroke on the clock, but it’s probably not time to talk about time as being unreal. That might just destroy all the fun, or make it even more interesting, depends, again, on wether you think time is real or not – p.s. it’s not

Most people have faith in time though – but, as those who have bothered to look will tell you – time is an illusion, there is only ever now. And not in some easily forgettable Oprah book of the week way. Time is literally an illusion – there is and can only be the living now. If looked at properly – this should cause a significant shift.

But, as far as the tale goes – Marcelo is appreciated by Marcelo and friends, family and lovers regularly…  ok ok… irregularly by lovers (damn you effeminate Gay world!!)

So – it’s time to go and have some fun.

This blog will continue to be a little erratic for the next few weeks though… but, should be back in full swing in the new year…

Waking Up

Posted in Politics with tags , , , , , on December 9, 2009 by Castro

To wake up and hear that the results of the Australian supported U.S. War Of Terror in Iraq continues unabated under the pro war Obama administration should be no surprise. But to hear such high numbers killed by Capitalists adventures should highlight who we all should be uniting against.

Capitalists have killed how many people since it’s birth? Well, Just doing a quick search on line has given a few answers.

There was, as is typical, a fairly ignorant question asked on Yahoo! Answers – most people still don’t understand Socialism, Marxism, Communism or most left leaning philosophies, despite enjoying many of it’s benefits (universal healthcare, unemployment benefits and so on) – people get all muddled up and confuse historical misinterpretations or simply have been watching and believing way too many American movies.

So the loaded question is “Has Capitalism or Socialism killed more people?”

The ‘best’ answer given with the highest rating was this one.

“Capitalism. The system has been responsible for many imperalist, territorial wars over resources. In its most extreme form (Fascism) it slaughtered millions during the First and Second World Wars. There are still wars being waged in Afghanistan, Palestine and Iraq over oil and territory. Religion has been used by capitalists as a tool to divide and rule people – a population fighting amongst itself is in no position to unite to fight back for better conditions for ordinary people – leading to yet more bloodshed.

There have not been any truly communist states (except for maybe Russia at the very beginning of the revolution before Stalin took over and, briefly, Catalonia at the height of the Spanish Civil War). The Red Army had to fight the 21 invading countries which tried to do away with Bolshevism at the start of the revolution, as they saw it was a threat to capitalism. In the Spanish Civil War, Churchill’s Tory government supported the Fascist dictator Franco.

Socialism and true communism are the same thing (sigh, as I have to explain this for the hundredth time to confused Yahooers who think that Stalinism = communism). It needs to be democratic and not controlled from above and it needs to be spread internationally, not confined to a single country. There should be no bureaucracy or privileged leadership.

There are socialist aspects of some capitalist economies, but these have only been won through workers’ struggles, for example the NHS was only founded as a result of the militancy of the working class after the Second World War. Capitalism only seeks to maximise profits for the rich and does not care about ordinary people. One day, hopefully, enough people will see that we need to get rid of this cruel system and we will have revolutions across the globe.

Thinking about this a bit more – capitalist has also killed millions of people through starvation. In a truly socialist society, there would be no poverty, as wealth would be distributed equally.

Croxx – the Mongols were neither, as in the thirteenth century, neither capitalism or socialism had yet developed. Most people were too busy trying to survive than to worry about making a profit, and in other places there was a feudal society – where lords took a proportion (a tithe) from the crops grown by peasants.”

So how many people have died due to Capitalism? If you add the damage done to the environment on top of all the countless wars waged and all the deaths caused by the side affects of all the products and crap drilled into us – the numbers are too staggering to even ponder.

So, who is the real enemy? Christian? Muslim? American?

Capitalism is the enemy of all these three usual suspects. Capitalism is anti-Australia and anti-America – it has turned us westerners into devils, when it doesn’t have to be that way.

I’m not saying that a Socialist society is paradise – since all unchecked philosophies can run rampant. But, lets look at the facts first.

And, hey, if someone out there has a better idea – lets hear it!
